Only You Can Control Your Future

I have two little girls, ages 4 & 6, so needless to say I read a lot of children’s books. My favorite books that we read together are by Dr. Seuss. Partially because that’s what I read when I was young and it reminds me of my childhood. But now as an adult I can see the deeper meaning in his books and pass it along to my daughters.  Now, we haven’t read The Lorax yet, but I came across this image the other day and really got me thinking… The things in our life that we don’t have control of definitely outnumber those which WE CAN CONTROL. But there’s no question in my mind that we as individuals truly CAN CONTROL OUR FUTURE. The weather, the government, that guy that cut you off or what someone thinks about us are out of our control. Dwelling on these things is a waste of energy, time and ultimately leads to anxiety, stress, sickness & lack of focus & attention to our goals. However there are three things we can influence, and control. Highly successful people understand this and spend their time and energy on these components which ultimately control their future.

  1. OUR THOUGHTS: What we put into our head, positive or negative, is what we will focus on.
  2. OUR ATTITUDE: It is a little thing that makes a big difference and determines how you experience every aspect of your life.
  3. OUR ACTIONS: These are largely determined by our thoughts and attitude. When you put positive thoughts into your head, you’re more likely to have a good attitude about life, which leads you to taking action toward your goals.

There is a wonderful quote by Marianne Williamson that points out that our fear is not that we are powerless, but that in fact we are powerful beyond measure. We can influence more than we think with our thought and attitude. Given enough time, courage and determination, we can modify, impact, transform and re-invent almost everything in our lives. We are not in complete control; that is no excuse to deny the power we have!

2016 is right around the corner. You will have 52 weeks in which to choose your priorities. You will have 365 days to decide where to focus your time, your attention and your efforts. But you don’t have to wait until January 1st to start controlling your future. STARTING TODAY you can choose your attitude, your friends, your reading material, your diet, your fitness program, your focus and your goals. Whether it’s a weight loss goal, improving some of your CrossFit or fitness benchmarks, getting a raise, promotion or being debt free… DECIDE NOW that you are going to do whatever it takes to make it happen. You can, to a remarkable degree, make significant strides in creating the life you want. Choose well. Use your power!
